Do we want a Dual Format HD Disc ?

January 10, 2007

Warner Home Video announced the release of a dual format HD Disc that supports HDDVD, and Blu Ray. Kind of irritating that they try to sell this as a solution, when the real solution is consumers making a choice about which format best fits their needs – capability/price. I still ask the same question I did in an earlier post – Do we want two formats ?

Warner mentions that less store space would be used by retailers since only one disc would be needed. So I have to ask, “What about the players ?”. If we support two players, isn’t there going to be more shelf space devoted to the various HD DVD and Blu Ray players ? Seems that it’d be cheaper for retailers to have to only sell players for one format.

This dual format would also require mastering for both formats, so that is another extra cost as compared to one format.

Bottom line is that this dual format is an attempt to solve a problem that should solve itself when a format is chosen by the masses. Buying into this concept only costs you more money because a % of money goes to supporting a format whose player you don’t even own.

Do we really want another format ? Dual format players and media is not the answer in my opinion. I personally think the next logical step is content being streamed to us via our Cable/Satellite/Other TV provider. Look at the music industry as an example. What has downloadable content done to that industry ? I don’t think I’ve bought a single physical CD in over a year and I am more satisfied with the convenience of buying music via download. I think the masses have spoken on that already as well.

Also, Do we really need an ugly dual-color case that constantly reminds us that we are supporting two formats with our purchase ?

Apple’s iPhone

January 10, 2007

I’m not much of a cell phone person, but the new IPhone looks pretty cool. If you are going to buy a phone solely on looks, you’ll end up with this phone hands down.

Some features of note :

  • Widescreen – it has motion sensors that switch to widescreen when you have it sideways.
  • Touch screen – you basically do everything with your finger. (Of course none of the screenshots show the finger smudges you’ll see when you use that feature all day long)
  • Safari Browser to browse the internet – Not sure if it supports flash.
  • It’s pretty much an Ipod Video as you can store music and video.

I don’t think that I would ever buy this phone as it’s too expensive. But did I mention it looks cool ? I would have thought Sony made this phone if someone didn’t tell me it was an IPhone.

Lady Sovereign vs Jelly Donut

January 10, 2007

Lady Sovereign was called out by a Jelly Donut at a SF concert on Jan 8th. Apparently Jelly Donut is a SF rapper who came to the show in his Jelly Donut costume to get a chance to have a rap battle with Lady Sovereign. Lady Soverign turned him down, and it’s said that she actually spit on him which got some of the crowd pissed enough to throw beer at her.

I did some research and it appears this must be a legit story as I’ve even found Jelly Donut’s mySpace page. You can also see him in action in this Video. Given the quality of his work, I really don’t think it was worth Lady Sovereigns time to engage in a battle with him.

WiiCade supplies Wii with Flash games

January 10, 2007

Nw that you can get a browser that supports Flash games for your Wii, that opens up a whole world of games. Wiicade.com is a site that caters to users who want to play these games. They have been encouraging Flash developers to make new games and convert their old games to be played on the Wii.

Even if you don’t have a Wii, the site is worthwhile to check out. They have alot of very fun game that just utilizing a mouse and one button.  If you have a Wii with the new Opera browser, it’s a no-brainer.

If you are a flash game developer this is a good place to showcase some of your games. I myself am thinking about submitting a few games.

Korean gamers make bank

January 10, 2007

I was watching a show on TV about modern day video games and how it’s effecting our world. One of the segments revolved around gaming competitions in Korea.

It seems that the game of choice for Koreans is “Starcraft”. These gamers make well over 100k a year, in a country where roughly 16k is the average. These game competitions can draw hundreds of thousands of people and they are broadcast on a 24 hour cable channel devoted to games. They actually have 2 channels that are devoted to games around the clock. They actually have teams that compete against each other head to head.

I am just amazed that they are so rabid about one game. Granted that Starcraft was a good game, but it’s pretty old. You’d think that they could expand their horizons a little bit and step into this decade.

Tigger punches punk kid

January 10, 2007

This is an example of a parent not being able to realize that his son is lying.

It’s so obvious that when Tigger was turning, the kid was holding onto him in some way.

Zipper ?

Pulling his tail ?

What other plausible reason is there for Tigger smacking the kid ?

You’ll even notice that his first move is to remove the kids arm from his back. Doesn’t that say enough ?  Disney needs to back Tigger up.
